2011 Tournament a solid success
Jo Thorman Memorial Golf Tournament - September 10, 2011 Glen Abbey Golf Club
Thanks to All Participants and Supporters
Thanks to all the participants and other supporters for this year's Jo Thorman Memorial Golf Tournament. It was great to see everyone out enjoying another fantastic day.
This is for many reasons:
• Many return golfers who continue to support us, and a few new faces
• Great day for golf at a fabulous golf facility, which everyone seemed to enjoy
• Great camaraderie (and harassment) at the post golf festivities
The result is another great year of raising money for a worthy cause.
We look forward to an even more successful tournament next year. We have already reserved Glen Abbey for 72 golfers, more than we’ve ever had in the past. So please mark Saturday September 8, 2012 on your calendars now.
Tournament Summary
I believe most of you are well aware of the focus of the tournament, but for those who are not, I have provided a summary as follows: this tournament started well before Jo passed away. It was just a bunch of guys (mostly old high school friends) getting together for a fun tournament. Over the years, it grew to the point that we had about 20 guys all putting in $100 or so and we would pay it out based mostly on who was the luckiest that day. We even got to the point of getting a corny trophy.
After Jo passed away, a few of the guys decided that some of the proceeds could go to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation as a tribute to her. Soon this evolved until now when all the money raised is donated to charity, with the receipts for the donations being split between the golfers (again, based on who was luckiest that day).
This year we began donating to the Juarvinski Cancer Research Foundation. This foundation is based in Hamilton at the hospital where Jo was treated. Both Jo and I were very impressed with the quality of care and people there and we hope that the funds donated are put to great use for ongoing research, facilities and patient care.
This year was another highly successful year. As a group, the golfers raised $5,070, plus an additional $940 in the lucky raffle, bringing the total to $6,010. MSCM LLP, in addition to covering the costs of dinner and a few raffle prizes, has donated an additional $8,000. There were also a couple of other private donations, bringing the current year’s total to $15,000. This also brings the total we have raised since we started donations to exactly $95,000. I look forward to next year when we will certainly break the $100,000 threshold.
