Now that IFRS is here, is your Audit Committee as ready as it should be?

Introducing MSCM's new “Bringing the Board up to Speed” program - a unique opportunity for Audit Committee members.

The transition to IFRS brings a particular challenge for Audit Committee members, because much of the experience they obtained in a Canadian GAAP environment just isn’t relevant any more.

Program Description The program, called "IFRS Literacy: Bringing the Board up to Speed" offers participants an effective way to improve their understanding of relevant IFRS changes and provides real and direct insight into issues that affect the Company they govern. The program is presented by John Hughes, whose analysis, insight and guidance will go beyond the generic and beyond the theoretical. He will focus his attention on your Company's issues and your Company's realities, and help your Audit Committee be more effective as the rules and practices change in 2011.

Program Leader John Hughes The statement to the right is from John Hughes, CA, and author of the new book IFRS Literacy: Understanding the New Financial Statements. John possesses an in-depth, specific and practical knowledge of IFRS, and his book is viewed as an important resource for executives and board members who have responsibility for auditor oversight and for analyzing and approving financial statements.

Why is the program necessary? Your Board of Directors' audit committee has a responsibility under the rules of governance to maintain a defined level of "financial literacy". While most boards have been comfortable with this responsibility under Canadian GAAP, many are not fully aware of the impact that IFRS can have on literacy levels. The simple truth is that many Audit Committee members will soon discover that their knowledge has fallen behind, and that they may be unable to meet their obligation of responsible auditor oversight.

Who is it for? The program is available for any interested listed company on all exchanges but highly recommended for companies listed on the TSX. It is especially valuable for Audit Committee Members, or any executive with audit oversight or analysis responsibility.

How long does it take? The program typically begins with a 2-3 hour preliminary review of your Company’s financial statements by John Hughes. The review is followed by a 3 hour private consultation between John, your Audit Committee members and others involved with financial statement compliance matters.
